Nigeria commenced the HIV Mortality Surveillance (MS) program aimed primarily at determining the distribution & patterns of leading causes of death (CoD) among individuals living with HIV (PLHIV) who are currently receiving treatment.

In an effort to enhance the quality of data collected for the MS program, the National AIDS & STDs Control Programme (NASCP) established a committee consisting of 23 members drawn from PHIS3, funding agencies; CDC, USAID, DoD, AHF Nigeria, The Global Fund, and implementing partners.

This committee convened from the 28th to the 30th of August 2023 to review the Verbal Autopsy tools & processes, with the objective of enriching the quality & depth of the MS data. The meeting provided an extensive overview of the quality assurance measures associated with the implementation of recency surveillance in Nigeria.
