What We Do

The current national surveillance system is limited in the breadth, depth, and coverage that are needed to provide timely, robust, and usable data for decision-making to manage the double burden of disease in Nigeria

  • The current national surveillance system is limited in the breadth, depth, and coverage that are needed to provide timely, robust, and usable data for decision-making to manage the double burden of disease in Nigeria
  • In addition, the existing surveillance systems are fragmented, vertical, and disease-oriented resulting in inefficiency, role duplication, and high cost of program and policy implementation.
  • Strengthen existing both routine and non-routine HIV surveillance systems in depth and coverage
  • Expand routine HIV survillance to other key sentinel events like drug resistance surveillance, sexually transmitted infections (STI) surveillance, and advanced HIV disease surveillance
  • Work towards building a national integrated disease surveillance system—a one-stop-shop that builds on existing platforms such as the  Nigerian Medical Records System (NMRS), National Data Repository (NDR), Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to support warning and response systems for notifiable diseases, infectious diseases threshold reporting, and non-communicable diseases (NCD) surveillance notification systems
  • Strengthen the NCD surveillance systems to guide a national concerted response by keeping in view the double burden of disease in the general populace and the growing number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) on long-term Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)
  • Build resilient and adaptable systems for timely reporting of current health events and emerging threats
  • Develop and strengthen response teams that can intervene to identify threats in a timely manner and mitigate the transformation / progression of outbreaks into health disasters
  • Integrate response and control reporting into existing reporting systems for measuring, accounting, and managing resource allocation for interventions.
