What We Do
The current national surveillance system is limited in the breadth, depth, and coverage that are needed to provide timely, robust, and usable data for decision-making to manage the double burden of disease in Nigeria
- The current national surveillance system is limited in the breadth, depth, and coverage that are needed to provide timely, robust, and usable data for decision-making to manage the double burden of disease in Nigeria
- In addition, the existing surveillance systems are fragmented, vertical, and disease-oriented resulting in inefficiency, role duplication, and high cost of program and policy implementation.
- Strengthen existing both routine and non-routine HIV surveillance systems in depth and coverage
- Expand routine HIV survillance to other key sentinel events like drug resistance surveillance, sexually transmitted infections (STI) surveillance, and advanced HIV disease surveillance
- Work towards building a national integrated disease surveillance system—a one-stop-shop that builds on existing platforms such as the Nigerian Medical Records System (NMRS), National Data Repository (NDR), Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to support warning and response systems for notifiable diseases, infectious diseases threshold reporting, and non-communicable diseases (NCD) surveillance notification systems
- Strengthen the NCD surveillance systems to guide a national concerted response by keeping in view the double burden of disease in the general populace and the growing number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) on long-term Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)
- Build resilient and adaptable systems for timely reporting of current health events and emerging threats
- Develop and strengthen response teams that can intervene to identify threats in a timely manner and mitigate the transformation / progression of outbreaks into health disasters
- Integrate response and control reporting into existing reporting systems for measuring, accounting, and managing resource allocation for interventions.

Health Information System
We support the country to strengthen existing informatics governance structures, policies and guidelines...
We support the strengthening and institutionalization of Health Informatics (HI) education while ensuring that critical needs in line with core informatics competencies are addressed. We help build the capacity of GoN officials to manage informatics projects and we strengthen and coordinate communities of practice for developing and implementing HIS projects. We also support the development, implementation and use of the country’s NDR data for program planning and decision making while ensuring the development and implementation of other HI systems including EMRs, LIMS, and commodity management systems. We facilitate the integration and data exchange between HIS both within and across different disease programs such as between EMR and NDR, EMR and LMIS, HIV EMR and other disease-specific EMR systems and we conduct appropriate evaluations of informatics projects and systems for understanding functionality, cost analysis, information exchange, quality of data, and quality improvement. In addition, we develop programs and materials for the expansion of the NDR and the programs and materials created during this award may be copyrighted but with license from the CDC.
